A little late but here are some of the events scheduled for the remainder of the year.

June 11 Laityview has Talent talent show
June 12 Waterslides field trip info due in. please return permission and money ASAP
June 17 Waterslides field trip. Students will be bused to Cultus Lake and return to school for 330pm
please see field trip form for all details or check with the office but it is important that students arrive to school ON TIME this day and note that we will be RETURNING LATE
June22 Waterwise presentation in afternoon
June 23 French Cafe students have been asked to bring in treats for the cafe/class party. Notice will be sent out soon with details or see Mrs Flag with questions
June 24 LAST DAY FOR STUDENTS We will be dismissing students at 12 pm
It has been a pleasure teaching the students of Division 3. They have worked hard, learned lots and I think we are all looking forward to some rest and relaxation. Enjoy your summer but remember to read and practice times tables often.

Genius at Work
What a great year it has been for genius projects in our class. This final term has really wowed me with both the commitment many showed to their projects and the improvement in the presentation styles.
This term focused on our class taking on a service project. They were asked to choose a social issue they were passionate about and try to create some change for the good. Some students chose to educate others bout their cause, some took surveys and used that information to guide ways others could help and many chose to fundraise to help their cause. Some themes were quite popular this year. We had a lot of kids fundraise for the SPCA to end animal cruelty and Kidsport to help kids afford to play sports but we also saw projects supporting education for girls, water conservation, and homelessness issues affecting adults and youth.
our class worked very hard on these projects, reaching out to the different organizations for information and volunteer service and as a class your children raised over $1200.00 towards their causes through coin drives, lemonade stands and bottle drives.
When you add this service to the work we did in December assembling homeless care kits and buying toys for tots Division 3 has demonstrated a huge amount of compassion and caring for others this year. I am so proud of this group of students and I know you are as well.

May Events
Sorry for late post, still not quite used to blogging regularly. Here are some of the things happening in May
May 18 no school Victoria Day
May 19 No school Pro D day
May 20 school assembly with magician 9am
our class will be trying out coast Salish weaving with our Ab ed coordinator Wed and
Thurs
PE moved to Thursday due to weaving
May 21 weaving continues in morning
PE at 130
May 22 Track and field day gr 6's in am and gr 5's in pm students will work in class during
non track times
May 22-27 School Bookfair come check out whats for sale
May 26 Canoe and Kayak trip to Whonnock Lake see field trip section for more details
Other happenings
For Inquiry we have just finished our STEM challenges. Students were given a variety of science based challenges, such as building towers, boats and other structures out of different materials and applying math, science and engineering thinking to each problem. They were tasked with researching solutions and reflecting on their ideas. We ended this unit with creating a container that would protect a raw egg when dropped from a high height (the school roof)
The egg drop was well received and we were surprised at all the different designs created. In the end only 2 eggs broke so the containers were very successful.
We will be moving on to a unit on government and students will have the opportunity to participate in their own election campaign.
Summer reading Challenge
Our class has signed up to participate in the Scholastic summer reading challenge. A notice was sent home explaining a bit about the challenge and how students can sign in to log their reading minutes. They also have access to ebooks that are exclusive to challenge readers and games and contests between now and Sept. For now students are logging their minutes throughout the week and all reading minutes count, including those done at home so please encourage your child to read and record their times. My hope is that they will continue to read throughout the summer and continue to log their minutes and help their school work towards a free authors visit.
Pre Summer slow down
Now is the time that we start to see students slowing down, not working as hard during class time or socializing more. With the nice weather it is easy to start thinking summer holidays and lazy days, myself included. But now is a good time to remind your child that while summer is coming quickly, there is still work to do and a need to push themselves to keep working hard and putting their best effort in.

The PAC is hosting Kathleen Hatley who will be coming to provide a sex education talk for
all students gr 1-7. Notices were sent home on the portal. If you do NOT want your child to attend this talk please send them with a written note signed by a parent on Thursday morning April 16. Without written indication, all students will be sent to their age appropriate talk. The gr 5 students will attend from 1030-1115 and the gr 6 students will attend from 1240-130.

Field trip to SFU for science workshops. Please make sure your child has a bagged lunch and is dressed comfortably to move. we will be leaving school at 9 and and should be back for dismissal. We have 1 parent driver but another would be great.
April 22
Unsure of the time yet but we should be participating in a drumming workshop by Uzume Taiko this day.
Today is also Earth Day and for school spirit we are asking students to dress in green.

Welcome back!
I hope that everyone has had a relaxing Spring Break and is returning ready to jump back in. Final term always goes so quickly and before you know it, it will be summer. As you can see I now have a class page up and going and will do my best to update it weekly so that parents and students can keep up on what is happening in our class.
A few reminders for you.
Term 2 conferences will be starting the week of Mar 30-April 2. Wednesday April 1 is an early dismissal day with students going home at 1130. Wed afternoon and all day Thursday school is not is session due to conferences, which is then followed up with Fri and Monday off for Easter holiday. School will resume as normal on Tuesday April 7.
Thanks to all the parents who came to visit our Passion Fair before Spring Break. The students were excited to have so many visitors through our room and they all did a great job on their projects. I was very proud of our class.
